Shillong, May 10: The Jaintia Students’ Union (JSU) met with Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui recently at Jowai Polytechnic and submitted a comprehensive memorandum outlining urgent educational challenges facing students across Jaintia Hills and Meghalaya.
Following direct consultations with principals of local government schools and colleges, the JSU has identified several critical areas requiring immediate government intervention to support underprivileged students.
The union’s key demands include a tuition cap, using existing infrastructure to open and expand evening sections across government schools and colleges to address the shortage of places, filling of sanctioned posts across the region, fixing dilapidated school buildings and to equip local schools with smart classrooms, science labs and vocational tools as part of the National Education Policy 2020. Additionally, the pressure group called for the deployment of trained counselors to support the growing mental health needs of students.
