Shillong, May 8: The commission of inquiry constituted to probe the deadly Thangsko illegal coal mine explosion held a three-day sitting from May 6 to 8 where several submissions were recorded.
The blast took place in February where more than 30 workers at an illegal coal mine were killed in a massive explosion. Facing huge pressure, the government initiated the probe, which is being led by retired judge RS Chauhan.
Submissions were recorded from the Principal Chief Conservator of Forest and Head of Forest, Shillong, Central Mine Planning and Design Institute Ltd of Ranchi, Union Ministry of Coal, the Director of the Directorate of Mineral Resources, Shallang Area Traders Association, South West Khasi Hills Mine Owners and Exporters Association, North Eastern Space Applications Centre, Indian Bureau of Mines and relatives of the victims.
The commission’s next sitting will be from July 13 to 15. On the first day of that sitting the commission members will visit the incident site.
In a release today, the commission said that members of the public who wish to depose before or make further submissions to the commission can do so by writing to the commission of inquiry’s secretary at Room 228, Main Building, Meghalaya Secretariat, Shillong or to email commission.inquirymeg@gmail.com.
