Shillong, May 6: An all-party meeting to discuss the report of the expert committee on the state’s Reservation Policy was held here today.
A notable absence, however, was that of the opposition Voice of the People Party (VPP), which had pushed strongly for a review of the policy.
The expert committee did not propose any major alterations to the 54-year quota system, which had been known before.
During today’s meeting, there were presentations on the report, discussion with representatives of political parties and remarks by Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma. Suggestions from political parties will be welcomed by the government.
Meanwhile, the VPP, in a letter to the government, stated that the timing is not conducive for the said meeting.
“At present, we are actively engaged with pressing issues concerning the state and its people which require urgent attention from the government. In light of these circumstances, we find ourselves unable to participate in the proposed meeting,” the VPP stated.
