Shillong, May 1: The Meghalaya Legislative Assembly hosted a high-intensity constituency development workshop at the state convention centre.
Organised by the Meghalaya Institute of Governance (MIG) in collaboration with various esteemed partners including the Harvard Growth Lab and the Indian School of Business, the workshop aimed to equip legislators with practical tools to effectively tackle pressing local challenges.
A central theme discussed was the “clarity of purpose” initiative, encouraging legislators to prioritise sectors where Meghalaya has a competitive edge. This includes areas such as border trade, high-value agriculture, and tourism, aiming to transform policies into actionable outcomes that enhance sustainable livelihoods in rural clusters.
The technical framework presented by Ricardo Villasmil, senior researcher at the Harvard Growth Lab, outlined structural economic challenges and propose a data-driven roadmap to accelerate Meghalaya’s progress.
The session, chaired by Speaker Thomas A. Sangma, marked a notable shift from conventional administrative briefings. Emphasising rigorous economic diagnostics, the workshop focused on youth employment and sustainable livelihood generation.
The Speaker stressed that the youth of Meghalaya demand tangible outcomes and real opportunities, raising the responsibility of MLAs to actively drive development within their constituencies.
The workshop established a collaborative platform to integrate both short-term and long-term strategies, focusing not just on infrastructure improvements, but a holistic model for economic transformation and community participation in governance.
