Shillong, Apr 28: A man who allegedly posed as a MePDCL employee to cheat residents was arrested by Jengjal Police on April 27 after evading arrest for a long time.
The accused, Kissan B. Marak of Ampati, South West Garo Hills, was nabbed in a raid conducted by the Jengjal Police Station team, Superintendent of Police Abraham T. Sangma said in a statement issued.
A case of cheating by impersonation was registered at Jengjal PS based on an incident on April 10, 2026. As per the FIR, Marak visited a complainant’s house at Nengkalgree under Jengjal PS, claimed to be an MePDCL official, and collected Rs 6,750 towards an electricity bill payment. He was later found to be not a genuine representative.
Enquiry revealed that the accused had similarly cheated other individuals by posing as MePDCL staff and fraudulently collecting money.
As per records, six other cases have already been registered against Marak in various police stations across West Garo Hills, besides several verbal complaints from the public about similar acts.
Police suspect there may be more victims who have not lodged formal complaints due to lack of information or awareness.
The public has been urged to come forward and lodge an FIR or written complaint at the nearest police station if cheated in a similar manner by anyone impersonating MePDCL or other government staff.
“Remain vigilant and do not make any payment to unknown persons without proper verification from the concerned department,” SP Sangma said.
