After the apex court intervention, the tribunals in Bengal uphold four appeals of voters. But more than 27 lakh voters still remained under adjudication. The Supreme Court on Monday orally said, “The tribunals will proceed with the hearings. We do not want to rush it, but we need to freeze the list somewhere.”
But when the hearings cannot be rushed, why should there be a rush to freeze the list before the assembly election? Why should not more than 27 lakh voters (almost equal to the population of Albania, 144th largest country by population) get the benefit of the doubt and vote in this election? If a trial cannot be rushed, can punishment be administered promptly?
