Shillong, Mar 19: West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Vibhor Aggarwal chaired a high-level meeting to review the prevailing security situation in the district, focusing on coordination between the administration, police, and central forces, as well as preparedness for the upcoming Eid festival.

The meeting was attended by senior officials, including the Superintendent of Police and representatives from various security forces, to ensure seamless coordination and address any operational concerns.

The district is in a volatile situation after sporadic incidents of violence in recent days, including clashes, arson and damage to property in Tura and adjoining areas following protests over the issue of barring non-tribals from participating in a tribal council election.

Aggarwal emphasised the importance of maintaining peace and ensuring adequate security arrangements to prevent any untoward incidents during the festive period. Magistrates have also been deployed in sensitive areas to maintain law and order.

The Deputy Commissioner stated that curbing fake news remains a top priority for the administration. He informed that the internet services, which were temporarily suspended, have now been restored to facilitate access to verified information and reduce the spread of rumours. The public has been urged to rely only on official sources and trusted news platforms for accurate updates. Contact numbers of local police stations and control rooms have also been shared for addressing grievances and clarifications.

Meanwhile, the night curfew remains in force from 6 pm to 6 am, as a precautionary measure to closely monitor the situation and prevent any disturbances.

The Deputy Commissioner said the administration is reviewing the curfew on a daily basis and any relaxation or changes will be communicated to the public. Security deployment continues across the district to ensure the safety of all citizens, he added.

Highlighting the role of the community, he appreciated the efforts of citizens in opposing violence and promoting harmony. He noted that several peace meetings and prayer gatherings across the district have sent a strong message against violence. He further informed that the administration has been actively engaging with communities in various areas, including the plain belt, to restore normalcy. A recent meeting in Shyamnagar with church leaders and community members was described as positive, with a collective commitment to peace and stability.
