Shillong, Mar 5: The All A·chik Youth Federation (AAYF) has called on West Garo Hills police to register a suo motu case against former MDC Sofior Rahman of Baitbari, alleging his Facebook posts and videos insult Garo tribal rights and affront matrilineal custom.
In a statement, the AAYF alleged Rahman has continuously challenged and violated tribal rights and should be booked under multiple sections of the law, including the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act 1989.
Rahman has been forthright in arguing for the continued eligibility of non-tribals to run for and vote in the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) elections, the next of which are scheduled for April. There has been a move by Garo groups and politicians to restrict the franchise to tribals only.
