Shillong, Feb 26: Union Minister of State for Tribal Affairs Durgadas Uikey met with traditional heads (Nokmas) of East Garo Hills, Meghalaya, during his official visit.
The Nokmas presented several demands, including a dedicated room in the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC), a conference hall with improved connectivity, and skill development centres to preserve Garo culture.
They also sought traditional courts to enable judicial responsibilities, highlighting that 145 Nokmas in East Garo Hills lack such facilities. Concerns were raised about limited involvement in NREGS works, with Nokmas not being included as chairpersons in project execution.
Uikey assured the council of his support, directing the Deputy Commissioner to examine demands and provide administrative assistance.
