Shillong, Feb 13: In a tragic mix-up, a miner who was thought to have died in the Thangsko mine explosion was alive.
Shyambabu Singha (44) was believed to have died from injuries sustained during the February 5 explosion. His family performed his last rites at Karimganj, Assam, only to find out later that they had mistakenly claimed the body of another victim.
East Jaintia Hills Deputy Commissioner in a report to the State Disaster Management Authority said Singha was initially declared dead but on February 12 an information was received that he is alive and in better condition.
Shyambabu and his family members have been asked to appear before the Deputy Commissioner of East Jaintia Hills on February 13.
An investigation is underway to ascertain the identity of the person whose body was wrongly claimed by Singha’s family.
Meanwhile, as per official records the number of fatalities is at 32, with 10 injured. One body has not been identified yet.
