Shillong, Jan 21: The A·chik State Peoples’ Front (ASPF) Garobadha regional unit has written to the Commissioner of Food Safety to request for statewide inspection and regulation of food items entering Meghalaya.
The ASPF said it was seriously concerned over the safety and quality of essential food items such as onions, potatoes and other vegetables being imported into Meghalaya from outside the state.
“A significant portion of the population across Meghalaya depends on these supplies for daily consumption,” the pressure group said in its letter. “There is growing public fear that insufficient inspection and monitoring of imported food items may lead to the circulation of contaminated, spoiled, or chemically treated produce, posing risks of food poisoning and other health hazards.”
In this regard, it urged the authorities to strengthen inspection and quality control measures at all entry points into Meghalaya, including inter state check gates, wholesale markets and storage facilities.
