Shillong, Jan 10: The District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), West Jaintia Hills, organised an Environmental Legal Literacy and Awareness Programme in Jowai on January 9, 2026. The event aimed to strengthen public awareness on environmental laws and community-level environmental protection.
Speakers emphasised that environmental protection is a legal duty and shared social responsibility, highlighting the interconnectedness of human life and the environment. They stressed the importance of maintaining cleanliness, tree plantation, and adopting eco-friendly practices to safeguard the environment for present and future generations.
The Range Officer, Social Forestry, Jowai Division, noted that the initiative was taken in response to deteriorating environmental conditions, particularly air pollution and climate-related issues. He urged everyone to take responsibility for protecting nature and plant trees to maintain ecological balance.
The programme aimed to empower communities, especially vulnerable groups, by informing them of their environmental rights and available grievance redressal mechanisms.
