Shillong, Dec 19: The Cabinet has approved the revised pay structure for more than 23,000 SSA and Ad hoc teachers.
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma described it as a major reform in the education system. He said the Cabinet has cleared the proposal placed by the Education Department that provides for a fixed salary structure along with yearly increments and seniority-based pay.
He said the decision also ensures employment security for the teachers, including provisions for contributions to the Contributory Provident Fund (CPF) by both the government and the teachers.
The Chief Minister said the policy will come into effect from April 1, 2026.
Sangma said in the next few months the government will finalise the implementation framework, including administrative and procedural details. He added that consultations were held with representatives of the Ad hoc and SSA teachers.
Acknowledging that the financial burden on the State’s exchequer will be “substantial”, the Chief Minister did not disclose specific figures.
Calling the decision a “turning point” for the education sector, thanked the teaching community, the Education Minister and officials of the department for their cooperation and sustained efforts.
