Shillong, Oct 15: A public protest was held today at the site of the historic Rajbari Bungalow in strong opposition to its demolition, which was carried out under the pretext of “restoration.”
The Laitumkhrah building, also known as Red Lands, belonged to the former king of the erstwhile princely state of Manipur. Its demolition was executed under the directives of the Planning and Development Authority of the state of Manipur and Manipur’s Department of Arts and Culture.
However, ordinary citizens of Manipur residing in Shillong have been vocally opposed to the demolition. Today’s protest was organised by the Manipuri Elders’ Consortium Shillong (MECS) and Shillong Manipuri Students’ Union (SMSU). Protestors gathered at the site early this morning to express their deep anguish and disapproval of the dismantling of the nearly century-old bungalow, calling it a significant cultural and architectural landmark.
The protestors said the demolition was conducted in haste despite repeated appeals made over the past month to relevant government departments to explore alternatives that would preserve the original structure with minimal damage and maximum care.
The protesters demanded accountability and strict action against the officials involved in authorising and executing the demolition. They also called for an immediate halt to all ongoing and future construction work on the site until a thorough investigation is conducted and responsible individuals are held accountable.
Additionally, MECS and SMSU expressed strong objections to the government-formed committee tasked with “monitoring and supervising” the reconstruction of the bungalow.
They asserted that individuals responsible for the demolition should not be involved in the restoration process. Instead, they urged the formation of an independent committee comprising qualified restoration experts, architects familiar with Anglo-Assamese design, and professionals with knowledge of local climatic and cultural contexts.
The groups also demanded a participatory role in overseeing the restoration as local stakeholders, ensuring that the process respects the historical and cultural integrity of the original structure.
Manipur is currently under President’s Rule, with authority resting with the Centre. Former Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh has questioned the way the demolition was handled. It has also been criticised by the Congress Party.
