Shillong, Oct 15: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma today said that the state has invested Rs 3,654 crores to the education sector, alongside grants-in-aid and other support.
Speaking at a function to inaugurate the Nongkharai Presbyterian Higher Secondary School in Umsohpieng spoke on the progress made by the government in welfare, infrastructure development and human resource development.
He stated that Meghalaya is now the second fastest-growing economy in the country after Tamil Nadu, with consistent growth averaging 10 per cent per year over the last three years.
Sangma mentioned ongoing reforms in the education system, including a structured salary system for ad hoc and SSA teachers, aimed at strengthening the system over the next 10–20 years and ensuring efficient delivery of education.
Emphasizing youth development, the Chief Minister encouraged parents, teachers, and communities to guide young people towards constructive pursuits through sports, music, entrepreneurship, and social programs.
He also announced a contribution from the Chief Minister’s Special Grant Fund to provide musical instruments for students of Sijun Memorial School and Nongkharai Presbyterian Higher Secondary School, highlighting the role of music in brain development and nurturing creativity.
Cabinet Minister Methodius Dkhar, Remington Gabil Momin, MLA of Rambrai–Jyrngam constituency, MDC Lurshai Kharbani and several government officials and community representatives attended the programme.
Secretary of the School Managing Committee, Rev. S.B. Lyngdoh presented a brief overview of the school’s journey, recalling its humble beginnings and the continuous support from the Government and the community.
He highlighted the recent funding and construction of the new secondary school building and outlined proposals for further development, including RCC fencing, recruitment of additional teaching staff, and construction of hostels, particularly for girls.
