Shillong, Sep 27: The Niksamso Garo Community organization Rajabala regional unit has raised concerns over the incomplete construction work of Melagri Government LP School in West Garo Hills.
Stating that the construction project was sanctioned in January 2023 with a total amount of Rs 44.79 lakhs, and running bills amounting to Rs 16 lakhs have already been paid to the contractor, the organisation said despite this, the construction remains incomplete.
“There is no visible progress on the site. Shockingly, the contractor responded irresponsibly to complaints from concerned citizens, displaying a lack of accountability,” the organisation said after conducting a spot visit.
The delay is not only causing serious hardship for students but existing school building is already damaged. During the rainy season, water leaks through the roof, making it impossible for students to attend classes properly, it added.
The organisation has sought for an urgent site inspection of the school construction, strict action against the contractor for negligence and misuse of funds and to cancel the existing work order if necessary and reassign the project to a responsible agency.
“It is unacceptable that similar projects in other divisions have been completed and are functioning, while Melagri Government LP School remains in a dilapidated state. Immediate intervention is necessary to safeguard the right to education of the children in this area,” it added.
