Shillong, Sep 22: The Post Graduate Students’ Union (PGSU) of North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Tura campus has urged Governor Chandrashekhar H. Vijayashankar to intervene and resolve the university’s longstanding institutional and financial crisis.
The campus has been grappling with these issues for nearly three decades, severely impacting students, teachers, and employees.
A memorandum was submitted to the Governor highlighting the dire situation on campus. Key concerns include lack of infrastructure, where five academic departments are without permanent classrooms forcing students and teachers to rely on makeshift arrangements, clean drinking water, hostel facilities, laboratories, and scarce transport services.
The union said that the recent budget cuts have brought the campus to the brink of collapse, halting faculty recruitment, promotions, and administrative procedures, the students said, adding that limited access to scholarly resources pose a significant challenge.
It pointed out that the self-financed Department of Master of Social Work (MSW) is particularly vulnerable, operating without permanent recognition and administrative backing.
“This is not only an institutional matter but also a humanitarian one. Students are being denied the dignity and rights they deserve as members of a flagship university. This is a call to action toward stability, dignity, and a thriving educational environment for our campus community,” the PGSU said.
The union stressed that without urgent financial support and administrative reform, NEHU Tura campus risks losing its purpose and legacy. “The crisis has already eroded the confidence of students, parents, and faculty. If left unaddressed, it could permanently damage the future of higher education in the Garo Hills region,” they stated.
The PGSU hoped that through the intervention of the Governor, NEHU Tura Campus would be able to surmount its current problems and achieve its original mission of inclusive, accessible, and quality education for all.
