Shillong, Sep 10: Amlarem legislator Lahkmen Rymbui during the Question Hour on of the Autumn Session on Wednesday humorously highlighted the area’s frequent power outages, saying, “While people in urban areas enjoy candlelight dinners, residents in his constituency are forced to have candlelit dinners every day due to power outages.”
Rymbui urged authorities to address the issue, emphasizing that despite having two power projects, Lakroh and Leshka, the area still faces significant power shortages.
Power Minister Abu Taher Mondal attributed the frequent power cuts to heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and strong winds causing damage to power lines and equipment.
He assured the House that steps are being taken to reduce power cuts, including upgrading infrastructure and addressing breakdowns promptly.
Mondal mentioned that 16 linemen are deployed in Amlarem sub-division to restore power quickly when outages occur.
The Power Minister also informed the House about planned shutdowns to facilitate system improvement works under the RDSS and LR projects.
He assured that the department is working on upgrading infrastructure, including the Syndai sub-station, which will soon be sanctioned to address the power shortage.
Chief Minister Conrad Sangma encouraged citizens to use the online redressal system by dialing 1971 for any grievances, stating that it’s a powerful and state-of-the-art technology-based system monitored daily by the CM Secretariat.
