Shillong, Sep 4: To restore degraded land and promote sustainable forestry, the Miyawaki Afforestation Project was inaugurated today in Narwan (Kmai Prut) village, East Jaintia Hills District.
The project implemented by the Divisional Soil & Water Conservation Officer aims to create dense, fast-growing forests in the region.
It covers a 2-hectare area and has been funded by the District Mineral Foundation (DMF) at Rs. 16.50 lakhs.
The Miyawaki method, developed by Japanese botanist Akira Miyawaki, involves planting native trees close together to create dense, self-sustaining forests.
This initiative is part of Meghalaya’s broader efforts to combat deforestation and climate change.
The state aims to restore green cover across 25,000 hectares using the Miyawaki Forest method, with strong community involvement and government support.
Sutnga-Saipung MLA Santa Mary Shylla inaugurated the project in the presence of Deputy Commissioner Shivansh Awasthi and other dignitaries.
In her speech she emphasised the importance of balancing development with environmental conservation and urged community members to participate in initiatives that secure a healthier future.
