Shillong, Sep 4: Leaders of the Jaintia Students’ Union (JSU) today met Governor Chandrashekhar H Vijayashankar advocating for Jowai to be declared the ‘Summer Capital’ of the State.
JSU president Jersom Shylla told reports that the demand is well-founded. He noted that Jaintia was the first district created following Meghalaya’s separation from Assam, and that the region has made significant contributions to the state’s development.
Shylla stated that granting Jowai the status of Summer Capital would be a fitting recognition of the region’s importance. He drew parallels with Tura, which has been designated as the ‘Winter Capital’, and asserted that Jowai merits similar consideration.
According to Shylla, declaring Jowai as the Summer Capital would bring numerous benefits to the region, including employment opportunities, enhanced development, increased recognition and prominence for the Jaintia Hills.
During the meeting, the JSU also raised other critical issues, including the implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP), the need to revisit the Instrument of Accession (IOA), among others.
