Shillong, Sep 2: The Garo State Movement Committee (GSMC) and Garo Students Union (GSU) have written to the Chief Minister to their and the public’s approval of a proposed bamboo industry hub in the Medipara area of Garo Hills.
There had been recent reports that residents belonging to a particular community were against the proposal.
However, the GSMC and GSU said in a joint letter that a public meeting was held in Pedaldoba on August 25, attended by several thousand individuals of the general public, village headmen, church leaders, women’s groups, etc, and they “unanimously decided to welcome this industry”.
Far from harming residents, such an initiative would bring employment, economic growth and counter illegal rubber plantations and stone quarries set up in the area by “Assam’s people”.
