Shillong, Aug 30: Various organisations and concerned citizens in Garo Hills have raised objections against holding of a concert by the National People’s Party (NPP) in Williamnagar on September 1.
The NPP has scheduled a programme to pay tribute to its late founder Purno A Sangma and celebrate the foundation day of the party at the Rongrengre field. Besides other programmes the concert has been timed to commence at 5 pm.
Stating that they have no objection to the formal programme of the NPP the organisations said holding the event amounts to disrespecting the issue pursued by the employees of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) and would disturb college students who will write their terminal examination.
The organisations stated that people of Garo Hills have shown solidarity with the GHADC and their hardships are being felt by every citizen on how they are not able to make ends meet due to non payment of salaries.
“If we start organising concerts it will be disrespectful and unempathetic to their cause,” the organisations said in a letter to the Chief Minister through the East Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner.
The organisations have also sought postponement of the concert.
