Shillong, Aug 30: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) conducted a checking drive in the Laban area and detained several non-tribals, who failed to produce valid documents.
KSU activists visited various locations, including Red Cross junction, Ïewdak, Mynsian Ranab, Cliford Nongrum road, and the taxi point under Lumshatsngi dorbar shnong.
Out of 58 individuals apprehended, 22 were found to be without valid documents, the KSU stated.
Laban circle general secretary Jason Laloo stated that most of those detained were Muslim refugees from Assam and other states, staying in rented houses without informing the local dorbar shnong. He said people from their community staying in Laban and Lower Lumparing were providing rented accommodations to these individuals.
The KSU has handed over the detained persons to Laban police station and warned residents of stern action if they provide outsiders with shelter.
