An 87-year old man becomes the State’s latest patient who defeated Covid-19 with no underlying sickness.
The patient H.K. Lounghani who was admitted to North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) tested positive for the virus on September 29 and was discharged on Saturday.
According to Director Prof Prithwis Bhattacharya, the patient was healthy with no other ailments (no co-morbidities) which helped the doctors in the institute to treat him.
“But he was not able to cope up with his oxygenation so then he was taken to the intensive care unit (ICU), initially he was on ventilator, after some time we could treated him with Remdesivir, Ivermectin as part of his treatment,” Prof Bhattacharya said.
The Director also said that the patient was given plasma therapy during the course of his treatment.
According to the NEIGRIHMS director, the institute collects plasma that has high anti-bodies.
“Some limited role of plasma therapy is there in trying to improve certain segments,” he added.
“Maybe weakness can be reduced and breathing will improve, when his breathing pattern was not improving we gave him plasma and he improved within 24 hours,” the NEIGRIHMS Director added.
Prof Bhattacharya however added that plasma therapy is not the only remedy to cure Covid-19.
It may be mentioned that the government is planning to delete convalescent plasma therapy from the national guidelines for Covid-19 treatment after the Indian Council of Medical Research’s (ICMR) clinical trial showed that the therapy did not significantly benefit patients suffering from the disease.
