Road accidents in Meghalaya have claimed the lives of 854 persons in the five-year period from 2018 to 2022.
According to data published by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, in 2018, there were 399 road accidents in Meghalaya.
The number of road accidents in the State jumped to 482 in 2019. In 2020, the death toll dropped to 214 but rose to 245 in 2021 and 246 in 2022.
In 2018, the number of deaths from road accidents in the State was 182. It slightly dropped to 179 in 2019. Again in 2020, the number of road accident deaths slipped to 144. However, it jumped to 187 in 2021. The death toll in 2022 was 162.
The number of people who got injured in road accidents in the State from 2018 to 2022 was 1220. These include 205 in 2018, 222 in 2019, 220 in 2020, 263 in 2021 and 310 in 2022.
However, Meghalaya has reported the lowest number of deaths in road accidents in the entire country, just below Nagaland and Mizoram, as per the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report for 2022.
Uttar Pradesh recorded the highest death toll from road accidents at over 21,000 followed by over 18,000 fatalities in Tamil Nadu and 14,999 in Maharashtra.
