Seven MLAs, including Speaker of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, attended the National Conference of State Legislatures'(NCSL) Legislative Summit in Louisville, Kentucky, USA.
Speaker Thomas A Sangma, Alexander Laloo Hek, Marcuise N Marak, Charles Pyngrope, Dr. Mohammed Mizanur Rahman Kazi, Rupert Momin and Wailadmiki Shylla were part of the delegation of 50 legislators from the country at the summit.
The event aims to provide a platform for knowledge exchange, policy development, and the strengthening of democratic institutions.
“I was thrilled to attend this remarkable conference in the USA, which brought together MLAs, MLCs, and Speakers from across India. The platform has been instrumental in expanding our understanding of global legislative practices. This summit has provided us with valuable insights into innovative approaches and solutions in governance,” Marak remarked.
He said the summit has fostered a spirit of collaboration that is crucial for addressing the environmental and legislative challenges. “I am excited to apply these learning to advance sustainable practices and effective governance in Meghalaya,” he added.
Founder of the NCSL, Rahul V. Karad said the summit represents a pivotal moment to strengthen global legislative ties. “Our participation in this summit has not only enriched our understanding of diverse governance practices but also reaffirmed our commitment to enhancing democratic institutions in India,” he said.
One of the highlights of the summit was the delegation’s visit to the Kentucky State Capitol Building, where they gained valuable insights into the legislative structures and processes of various U.S. states. This experience enriched their understanding of governance and legislative practices, fostering a deeper appreciation for the diversity of political systems, a press release said.
The summit 2024 hosted a series of sessions, interactive workshops, and networking opportunities on policies and practices that support future-ready students and schools, Artificial Intelligence, career pathways for student, cyber security and others.
