Some 540 pigs died due to African swine fever in 2020-21, Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Minister AL Hek informed the Assembly today.
In response to Nongkrem MLA Ardent Basaiawmoit, Hek said that Rs 16.20 lakh in compensation was provided to farmers in 2020-21. The government is continuing assessment of animal losses and will pay compensation accordingly, he added.
There are four veterinary hospitals and 125 dispensaries that provide vaccination and medicines to farmers besides conducting awareness programmes.
On lumpy skin disease, which affects cattle, Hek said that medicines have been given to all affected farmers. However, Basaiawmoit said that, according to information relayed to him, farmers have not received medication for ASF.
