Five persons were arrested after two taxi drivers were reportedly assaulted at Khyndailad last night.
This comes after taxi drivers went off the road and prevented other local taxis from plying throughout the day in protest against the assault.
East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police, Sylvester Nongtnger said during the course of investigation a team from the Special Cell along with the help of Guwahati City Police nabbed the five persons from Guwahati.
Nongtnger said one 27-year old Iohborlang Kharsohnoh and 25-year old Banshai Syiem of Laitkor were assaulted at around 10:30 pm last night by a group of miscreants as a result of which, both the victims sustained injuries on their person and were taken to Civil Hospital Shillong for medical treatment.
Police have not provided the names of the accused.
A case has been lodged at Sadar PS under section 307/324/326/34 IPC and investigation has been taken up.
The city today witnessed tense scenes as the taxi drivers were all on the road to protest against the assault that led to disruption of traffic movement in the area.
The East Khasi Hills Taxi Association served the police one day’s time. However, following the arrest of the five individuals within the deadline, the association assured to resume the local taxi service from tomorrow.
Meanwhile, hawkers at Police Bazar area ran for their lives as few of the taxi drivers on protest went marching in a crowd this evening. Fortunately with security already tightened in the area, the police were able to stop them from moving further ahead. The leaders of the taxi association calmed the crowd and urged them to disperse as their demands, which was arrest of the culprits, was met.
While interacting with tea stall hawkers, few mentioned that there was an exchange of words and the friends of the assaulter attacked the two drivers.
According to the eyewitnesses, what irked the taxi drivers was that the CRPF on duty caught hold of the five miscreants but let them go. This resulted in the local taxi drivers to vandalise police property at Sadar Police Station.
