The Garo Hills unit of the All Meghalaya 4th Teachers Association has not rolled over on its demand for pay parity and met with the Chief Minister, Education Minister and Director of School Education and Literacy in this regard recently.
The 4th teachers are pushing for equal pay with assistant teachers. The latter currently receive Rs 20,493 per month as salary compared to the 4th teachers who get Rs 18,000 (recently increased from Rs 12,000). This disparity exists despite both sets of teachers doing the same work with the same qualifications.
The association also wants its members to have their service regularised. It has raised these issues with the state government repeatedly but has yet to see a positive outcome.
