Four youth of Mowkyndeng village are being praised as heroes after they leaped into action to help rescue two drowning girls from a river in the village under West Jaiñtia Hills district.
The incident happened on Sunday evening at the Syllek (Tyngkla) river when the four youth, Waiphangki Pala (22), Thranglut-o-ki Pala (17), Onyxstone Pala (19) and Kyrpang-i-man Suchiang (19) were near the river when they heard a girl calling for help, Waheh Chnong, Syrpai Synnah said.
Waiphangki immediately rushed and rescued one the girls, Finie Suchiang (18). When he soon learnt that another girl was inside the deep waters, the four youth together dived in and manage to recover Arkini Suchiang (12) after a search of about four minutes inside the deep waters, Synnah said.
Arkini who had by then swallowed water was unconscious. But the youth did not give up and performed the cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) that brought back the life of the 12-year old who was also immediately shifted to the CHC Laskein.
Synnah also said that Arkini was later referred to the Dr Norman Tunnel Hospital in Jowai where she is under medical supervision and is stable.
