The Meghalaya police has arrested four persons from South Garo Hills in connection with the abduction of an employee of a construction company.
The four arrested person have been identified as – Wilban M Sangma (30), of Durabanda Songgital, Withmil S Marak (29) of Upper Dosogre, under Baghmara police station, Lathin M. Sangma, of Chandigre under Chokpot police station, and Rongsrang M Sangma of Gittingbibra under Baghmara police station all under South Garo Hills district.
According to, Shailendra Bamaniya, South Garo Hills, Superintendent of Police (SP), on March 20, authorities at Siju Police Station received information regarding the abduction of Akhilesh Singh Chauhan from a company station at Rongdik Bridge, Karukol.
The police promptly responded to the distress call and a comprehensive search and rescue operation was launched across various locations within South Garo Hills district.
According to Bamaniya, the following day, the kidnappers initiated their demands, seeking a ransom of Rs. 50,00,000 from both the victim’s family and the company manager.
“The dire consequence of non-compliance was chilling – a threat to end Mr. Akhilesh Singh Chauhan’s life within three days,” the South Garo hills said.
According to him as the investigation progressed, the identities of the perpetrators came to light.
Bamaniya said that following relentless efforts, on the evening of March 22, a targeted search operation was conducted in Upper Dosogre village, resulting in the successful rescue of the victim from the clutches of the kidnappers.
He said that no ransom money was exchanged during the operation.
During the operation, law enforcement seized a country-made weapon and two mobile phones from the possession of the captured suspects.
Further investigations have unveiled that all kidnappers have links to previous militant groups that once operated in the South Garo Hills region.
Siju Police Station has registered Case No. 01(03)2024, and a comprehensive investigation is currently underway.
