The Khasi Students Union has threatened to implement its own influx control mechanism after its Mawlai unit came across another three non-locals who entered the state without being able to produce valid documents.
The KSU informed that, yesterday, three outsiders tried to enter Shillong after travelling to the state from Assam. They allegedly switched vehicles, hopping from a tourist taxi to a local one at Lad Umsaw to avoid detection at Mawlai Mawiong.
The KSU handed over the three to Mawlai Police Station who, in turn, sent them back to Assam.
Warning commercial vehicles and contractors who are trying to bring outsiders into the state surreptitiously, the pressure group said, “The contractors in the state should give first preferences to the local and not put the state at risk especially amid the Covid-19 pandemic.”
Macdonald Jitem, publicity secretary of the KSU Mawlai unit, further said that the state government’s attitude is careless when it comes to the entry of outsiders.
“This government has only given us false assurances and it has not implemented the MRSSA (Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act) to check influx, so the KSU will implement its own influx checking mechanism,” he said.
