The 29th Inter School and 11th Inter College Karate Tournament 2023, organised by the All Meghalaya Karate-Do Association (AMKA), began today at the Multipurpose Hall at the Sport Authority of India’s Shillong Training Centre on the NEHU campus.
Supported by the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs, Government of Meghalaya, the annual karate championship for school children and college students will run until 19 August.
Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs Shakliar Warjri and Working President of the Meghalaya State Olympic Association John F Kharshiing attended the inaugural as guests.
Around 500 karatekas from 70 schools and six colleges will take part over the course of the three-day event.
2022’s champions were OM Roy Memorial Secondary School (inter school, girls), St Anthony’s LP School (inter school, boys) and Shillong College (college category).
The annual event gives space to the young karatekas of the state to demonstrate their ability in kumite (sparring) and kata (form demonstration) events and many martial artists have progressed from this tournament to national and international competitions where they have represented an won laurels for Meghalaya and the country.
