A total of 29 cases were booked for violation of provisions of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA) and a fine of Rs 1550 was collected in Nongstoiñ.
The action was taken by the Nongstoiñ Police Station led by Sub Inspector K. Mawlong yesterday.
Police said cases were booked for sale of cigarettes and other tobacco products. The team inspected all the shops nearby schools in Nongstoiñ area which included, St. Xavier Secondary School, Public School, Anderson Higher Secondary School, JJM Higher Secondary School, Sibsing Memorial Government Higher Secondary School and others.
COTPA prohibits the sale of tobacco products within 100 yards of educational institutions.
A warning was also issued to the shops for violating the act. Police have also urged the public to support the campaign and aid in establishing a tobacco-free and healthy environment for the neighbourhood.
