Shillong, Jun 1: Two women were rescued yesterday after they were allegedly taken from Barato to New Delhi for the sex trade.
The Delhi unit of the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) received a call from the two women seeking urgent assistance.
The two were lured to Delhi with the promise of hotel jobs by a woman, who later pressured them into prostitution.
When they refused, the woman allegedly demanded repayment of travel expenses, confiscated their mobile phones and did not allow them to leave.
The KSU immediately alerted Delhi Police, who located and detained the woman for questioning. She denied the allegations, claiming the girls came voluntarily to seek work and that she had only paid for their travel to help them secure jobs.
She also denied any attempt to force them into prostitution. Following police intervention, the woman was directed to return the girls’ phones.
Arrangements have been made for their return home. The family of one girl has already sent funds for her airfare and she is scheduled to fly back to Meghalaya tomorrow.
The KSU said it remains committed to safeguarding students and youth from Meghalaya outside the state. It urged job seekers to verify employment offers and check the credibility of recruiters before travelling.
