The court of Swapna G. Momin, Special Judge (POCSO) East Khasi Hills convicted two persons on March 18 in connection to two cases of sexual assault on minors and awarded them rigorous imprisonment and fine.
One Maitshaphrang Kharmawlong was found guilty under Section 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. He received punishment of rigorous imprisonment for 12 years and a fine of Rs. 10,000. In default he has to undergo simple imprisonment for another two months.
The convicted felon also received another three-year sentence and payment of Rs 5,000 fine under section 506 of the Indian Penal Code. This section deals with criminal intimidation. In default of fine, he has to undergo simple imprisonment for another one month.
The case was investigated by Inspector Raymond Kurkalang of and presently posted as Officer In-Charge of Mawngap Police Station.
In a separate ruling, the Special Judge sentenced one Demonstar Kharbani to three years rigorous imprisonment under Section 8 of the POCSO Act. He was also ordered to pay a fine of Rs 3000 and in default he has to undergo simple imprisonment for another month.
The case was investigated by Inspector Lily D. Sangma and presently posted as Second Officer-in-Charge of Sadar Police Station.
