Reckless driving in parts of National Highway 6 that have been reduced to one open lane because of repairs has led to 16 accidents in just three days, with numerous casualties.
Today a collision between two cars at Shangbangla led to injuries to three people. The injured were taken to Nongpoh Civil Hospital for treatment.
Because of renovation work, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has closed off lanes, forcing traffic to use just one or two. This calls for careful driving at slower speeds but this need is often ignored by drivers, leading to accidents.
Despite efforts by traffic police in Ri-Bhoi to curb reckless driving along the entirety of National Highway 6, many drivers continue to violate traffic regulations. This non-compliance has led to numerous injuries and deaths.
Reckless driving and overtaking are the primary causes of these accidents, police say. It is a grave concern that travelers, particularly those in public transport, are disproportionately affected by these incidents.
