Civil society activist Agnes Kharshiing has filed a complaint with Mawlai Police Station today with regards to alleged illegal transportation of coal,
Kharshiing also claimed that there are 100-plus coal trucks plying through East Khasi Hills every day, many of which do not have the proper challans.
Many of them are also carrying loads above and beyond the amount permitted, thereby robbing the state of revenue and damaging roads and bridges because they are overweight.
Kharshiing also claimed that oftentimes those trucks that did not have challans would produce a coupon when confronted by police doing their duty.
“In this regard I urge that all trucks carrying coal through your police station may please be detained and check the required documents how much coal is permitted for each truck and if the truck is overloading and if they are having proper documents for transportation of the auctioned coal and inquire who issued them this illegal challan and book them as per law and whether the law permits the issue of coupon for the transportation of coal in lieu of challan,” she said in her complaint.
