The Zeliangrong Students’ Union Shillong (ZSUS) has denounced and condemned the violent sexual assault carried out against a minor girl in West Jaintia Hills on June 15.
The 12-year-old girl was attacked by the 31-year-old male suspect in her own home while the rest of her family had gone out. A rape case under relevant sections of the IPC and POCSO Act was registered against the accused who was arrested. The child bore multiple injuries and was put under medical observation at a hospital in Shillong.
The ZSUS said that the girl belongs to the Zeliangrong community, adding that “it is a saddening fact that the minor has sustained irreparable mental trauma due to the terrorising act of the accused, which she will endure all her life.”
In a release today, it said it has full faith in the police to prosecute the accused and called for the “harshest possible punishment” according to the law as the crime has instilled fear, raised safety concerns and is a threat to the “innocent public at large”.
