World Rivers Day 2023 was observed in the city with the ‘Life to Rivers Rally’, which attracted around 200 participants, including 100-plus from the National Cadet Corps (NCC).
The cadets, officials, students and representatives from several government departments, residents and members of Rotary Clubs undertook a march with placards to create mass awareness about the need to save streams and rivers.
The rally started from Laitumkhrah police point at 11am and concluded at the NCC headquarters.
The rally was flagged-off by Water Resources Department Secretary SC Sadhu and NCC Colonel Chetan Dhiman in the presence of senior Rotarians and representatives from the Shillong Municipal Board.
The ‘Life to Rivers Rally’ was organised by Rotary Club Orchid City Shillong and Rotary Club Shillong Heritage in association with YesEarth Corps (Shillong), 2nd Battalion of the NCC Meghalaya. The initiative was supported by the Environmental Sustainability Rotary Action Group (ESRAG South Asia) and Adopt-a-River: UN Environment Programme & Rotary International.
