The Meghalaya State Commission for Women will take up the case of Walinda Binong, a Ri-Bhoi student who died in Rajasthan and assured justice.
Walinda, a fashion design student at the School of Design at Mody University died on Friday. The 19-year-old was reported dead at her college hostel in Sikar town, Rajasthan, under mysterious circumstances. While college authorities claimed that she had poisoned and later hanged herself, the family of the victim has denied this.
“The Meghalaya State Commission for Women will do all within its power to ensure that a proper investigation of the case is carried out and timely justice is met,” Member secretary of the commission, VH Blah in a statement today said.
While offering its condolences to the Binong family, the commission said, “The death of any young person, any young woman, is a tragedy beyond measure. What is deeply concerning are the circumstances surrounding the series of events that led to the loss of a young girl’s life.”
The commission further said that the death of Walinda underscores the abuses experienced by women and girls on a daily basis.
