Shillong, Oct 5: Meghalaya’s proportion of women arrested in the suspected commission of crimes is lower than the national average, according to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report for 2023.
In Meghalaya, 17 out of 822 people arrested for crimes under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) in 2023 were women, which is around 2 per cent. The national average, meanwhile, is 5 per cent (1,57,739 out of 30,03,024).
Also lower than average is Nagaland (18/924, 1.94 per cent), Arunachal Pradesh (67/1939, 3.45 per cent), Sikkimg (9/373, 2.41 per cent), Tripura (80/2831, 2.82 per cent) and Assam (574 out of 51858, 1.10 per cent).
Mizoram (193/2459, 7.85 per cent), however, had a proportion higher than the national average.
Of special and local laws (SLL), 51 people arrested in 908 (5.61 per cent) SLL crimes in Meghalaya were women. The rate was 8.95 per cent in Nagaland (111/1240), 17.82 per cent in Mizoram (175/982), 9.59 per cent in Arunachal (63/657), 12.83 per cent in Manipur (88.686), 2.76 per cent in Sikkim (8/290), 0.93 per cent in Assam (174/18650) and 11.12 per cent in Tripura (271/2437).
