Shillong, Sep 5: A group of women lawyers on Saturday met Governor Chandrashekar H Vijayashankar to protest against a statement made by Advocate General Amit Kumar during court proceedings concerning safety of women in the legal profession.
Speaking to reporters, High Court Bar Association advocate Barisha Khongthaw said Kumar’s statement was incorrect. “We as lawyers both men and women, work together and there has been no discrimination and harassment is out of the question,” she said.
She said after Kumar made the allegations; a committee was set up to examine if there were any harassment complaints.
Demanding his resignation, Khongthaw said the post should be held by a local. “The state government should choose from lists sent by bar associations,” she said.
She said earlier Advocates General were from the state and this is the first time the government appointed an outsider. “Despite being from outside, we accommodated him, but he chose to disgrace us in court,” she said, adding the Governor has assured to look into the matter.
