The main objective of NARI (Nutri Sensitive Agricultural Resources and Innovations) is to promote family farms for family nutrition through the need-based skill development of women and creating awareness about fortification of local foods and dietary diversity.
Anaemia is highly prevalent in Garo Hills due to the lack of iron folic in the diet and the farmers need to cultivate nutritious crops in their kitchen garden and consume them for improving the overall health of the family. With hard effort and the initiative of ICAR-KVK West Garo Hills, 30 nutri gardens were established under the Gambegre area.
Today, at Aminda Simsang village, a training programme on ‘Scientific Nursery Management in Vegetable Crops” was conducted by KVK scientist Ramavatar Yadav. Method demonstration on use of organic micronutrient for enhancing plant growth, vigour and yield of vegetable crops was conducted by Joyoshree Mahanta followed by distribution of micronutrient and vegetable seeds (okra, cowpea, ridge gourd, etc) from IIHR Bengaluru, one of the leading research institutes in horticultural crops in India.
The programme was attended by 45 farm women who took special interest in raising nutritious vegetables for enhancing family nutrition through consumption and raising family income by selling the produce. Monitoring of nutri gardens established in the village by the farm women was monitored by KVK scientists and feedback was collected.
