Shillong, Aug 13: Home Minister Prestone Tynsong on Wednesday said the state government is addressing the challenges flagged by the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) over land acquisition for the Western Bypass project, while warning against deliberate disruptions.
Tynsong said regular review meetings at his level and with the Chief Secretary have been held to resolve possession-related issues. While most stretches have been acquired and handed over to NHIDCL, he admitted that disputes remain in certain areas. “Sometimes, even after payment is made by the district collector, other so-called landowners come forward with claims. As per law, we process all grievances, but until ownership issues are resolved, payment will not be made,” he stated.
He added that although possession has been officially handed over, physical work in some stretches has faced resistance. “Some groups are trying to create problems. I have instructed the DCs of Ri Bhoi and East Khasi Hills to let the law take its own course. If security is needed, we will provide it. This project is meant for the public at large, not just a few landowners with personal interests,” Tynsong asserted.
The minister emphasised that the government will not allow “drama” to delay a project of such public importance.
