BJP MDC from Tura, Bernard Marak has alleged that the water scarcity in Tura was caused by absence of water sources in the second and third phase of the Tura Water Supply Scheme (TWSS).
“All lines distributed in Tura originally come from the Phase I project which was originally under Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC). This was revealed through RTI details received from the Deputy Commissioner’s office regarding implementation of TWSS,” Marak said in a statement issued today.
He also claimed that questions as to where the amount of Rs 35 crores for the water project was spent remained unanswered in the RTI reply even after the due date.
“Unofficial information received from some officers confirmed that the files of Phase I went missing while other information was not under record, which includes the main lines. Original distribution lines of GHADC under water works department also were unofficially taken over while GHADC is in dilemma over the disconnections of its own lines,” he asserted.
Marak said that the GHADC Chief Executive Member was apprised of the matter and has been requested to look into it as people are being disconnected from the GHADC water supply line by the State PHE Department causing inconvenience to the public.
He added that while the implementation and distribution of Phase I of water was under GHADC, however now the council was owing the PHE huge amounts of money to the tune of some crores as was being claimed by the PHE Department.
“There seem to be some major deals made without the knowledge of the GHADC Executive Committee. Even JJM projects are being supplied with water from the same water tanks which presently supply water to the residents of Tura which has resulted in water shortage in the town,” Marak alleged.
