A retaining wall of the under-construction Assembly building in Mawdiangdiang reportedly collapsed.
It is learnt that the construction of the three year old retaining wall was carried out by local contractors.
Confirming about the incident, Assembly Speaker Thomas A Sangma said, “A portion of the boundary wall which is below the new Assembly building had collapsed.”
He said the work was allotted to a local contractor. “I am not sure who the contractor is because the construction of it was divided into several parts and work was allotted to several contractors and payment was done much before I took over.”
Work on the new Assembly building was started in June 2019 and was to be completed by August 2022. The Rs 177.7 crore building is being constructed by Uttar Pradesh Rajkiya Nirman Nigam Ltd, a public sector undertaking of the Uttar Pradesh government.
However, on May 22, 2022, the collapse of the 70-ton steel dome was a highlight of what was to be an iconic structure of Meghalaya.
