The Voice of the People Party (VPP) appears to have outperformed most political parties in terms of the number of election meetings.
The VPP has fielded its general secretary Ricky A J Syngkon as the candidate for the April 19 Lok Sabha election from Shillong parliamentary constituency.
Since the announcement of the Lok Sabha election on March 16, the VPP has organised election campaign meetings across the 36 Assembly segments of Shillong parliamentary constituency to garner support for its candidate.
In a single day, at least four campaign meetings are held by the party and these are held not only in towns or urban centres but also in the corner most villages. On April 15, the party held 24 campaign meetings.
Two of them were held at Rynjah and Nongrah localities of the city where thousands of people attended to hear the speech by Syngkon and party president Ardent M. Basaiawmoit.
Tomorrow, as many as 13 campaign meetings are being held in various constituencies where party leaders will seek support for Syngkon.
The VPP will hold its final election meeting at Smit under Nongkrem constituency on April 17.
What is different about the VPP campaigns is the number of the crowd that gathers at each and every meeting venue.
The mammoth gatherings at Mylliem, Mawphlang, Rambrai, Pynursla, Umsning, Khliehriat and other constituencies are some of the examples.
However, it is yet to be known if the crowd drawn to these meetings will translate into votes for the party which is a newbie in the State’s political arena.
It may be recalled that the VPP had even started its poll campaign at least two months before the announcement of the poll date.
The ruling NPP is trying hard to match the VPP as far as covering the length and breadth of Shillong parliamentary seat to canvass for its candidate Ampareen Lyngdoh.
The Regional Democratic Alliance (RDA) of UDP and HSPDP which fielded Robertjune Kharjahrin is also running against time to complete the canvassing before the deadline of April 17.
