The Voice of the People Party (VPP) today met Education Minister Rakkam A Sangma on the problems faced by students who appeared for, or were meant to appear for, the Common University Entrance Test (CUET), the holding of which was a major debacle in Shillong.
Member of the VPP media cell Rusievian Shangpliang said that even after the recent fiasco in North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), where the exams were delayed for several hours, the state government has not taken steps to help the affected students.
“The party can’t wait anymore. Therefore we had to meet the Education Minister to discuss the matter,” Shangpliang said.
During the meeting with Sangma, the VPP raised the difficulties faced by those students who could not appear for the CUET due to the mess up and Shangpliang added these students have been left in the lurch as some colleges have started with their provisional admissions.
He said that students and their parents are worried about the admission process since many of them have missed the entrance test, which was conducted by the National Testing Agency.
Shangpliang said that the VPP enlightened the government through the minister that this issue is of utmost urgency and something needs to be done about it.
The VPP is urging the government to direct the colleges to base the admissions of students seeking to join undergraduate programmes on the basis of their Class 12 marks. Shangpliang said that Sangma assured the delegation that the government is considering the matter.
