Cyclone Remal did some major damage to the power grid in Garo Hills, with numerous power lines snapped in the storm, Power Minister Abu Taher Mondal informed today.
The Meghalaya Energy Corporation Ltd (MeECL) has placed 80 additional personnel to restore the snapped lines at the earliest but cannot say exactly when supply will be restored.
“We’ve been able to partially restore power in East Garo Hills but local problems are also arising,” Mondal said. “This is the current scenario – in many places trees have fallen down, conductors snapped, poles have fallen down. We’ve ensured that all personnel are split into groups and are trying to restore power at the earliest.”
Khasi Hills has not witnessed as much significant damage by comparison.
The Power Department is currently concentrating on restoring the major transmission lines that have been destroyed.
The minister informed that there are a total of 25 33&11 KV lines where restoration work is ongoing, affecting Tura, Dakopgre, Garobadha, Bajengdoba, Jengjal, etc.
“We are trying to assess the damage and will provide further details later. Some transformers have been damaged but our priority at present is restoring power,” Mondal said.
